Trailer watch: Parallel Love and a band called Luxury
The story of alternative rock band Luxury is both familiar and fascinating. Now a documentary called Parallel Love will bring the band's unorthodox story to your screens.
The story of alternative rock band Luxury is both familiar and fascinating. Familiar because the story of rock shoulda-beens is one we've all heard, but fascinating because of the outcome and different paths the band have taken since.
Formed in the early 1990s, Luxury released their debut full-length Amazing and Thank You in 1995 on noted Christian label Tooth & Nail Records. The band's guitar-heavy, melodic, alternative rock was very much akin the likes of Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Built to Spill, and at times, to the big sounds created by the Smashing Pumpkins, but with a less dour demeanor. The band seemed on an upward trajectory but a terrible highway accident in 1995 derailed Luxury's momentum.
After a year-long hiatus, the band returned and released their 1997 album The Latest & The Greatest. Once again taking on noisy, angular guitar music. The band never quite took off however but remained a consistent entity. Now years on, there is a new documentary that brings the band's story to your screens.
Can a band that consists of orthodox priests rock out like any other band? Parallel Love certainly believes so, and perhaps is proof that sometimes life will get in the way of plans, but a little faith will find a way to get you there in the end.
Parallel Love is directed by Matt Hinton and is scheduled to hit select cinemas in the US on May 15th.
