Poppy dramatics take center stage here. From the beginning of the new Woes new record Awful Truth, you’ll get a sense of a band letting their guard down and letting their music flow smoothly. Woes don’t reinvent the wheel, but what they do is a classy job of playing their hearts out. Combining pop-punk with a volatile edge, they implement massive choruses and stake their claim as gallant warriors of the scene.
Awful Truth is a collection of songs conveying a fucked up existence. The guitars are also imprinted into the fabric, shuddering the spines at an all-time pace. Sadness exudes here too, bad dreams hinder journeys, and explosive relationships batter in and create tension. The sad songs are justifiable, and they are bitter.
“Awful Truth” is a true pop-punk track. The chorus is infectious, and the song explores pain, misfortune, and youth decay. Suburbs begins in a subtle chime. It then rises up. The instrumentals are played in unison. The vocals edge in explaining why the truth is dying. “Mess” describes a failing life, a fucked, rusted, existence. This track bursts into a dynamic ballad. The band members are reeling from a bad dream. “Ugly” departs from the pop-punk effect. It delivers a different, beat-driven, raucous chorus. It is intelligent song-writing.
Woes offer us a pop-punk record that connects us to a world of reality. They don’t try to thrust us into their spotlight, but they want us to know their razor-sharp feelings.
