The Dollyrots - Daydream Explosion
14 songs on The Dollyrots' Daydream Explosion and they’re all infectious
Killer guitar riffs ingrain this record from The Dollyrots. Their sound is rough and ready but doesn’t depart from previous albums. There are 14 songs on Daydream Explosion and they’re all infectious. “Naked” fronts the line and it has one of the most addictive choruses you’ll hear this year. Lead singer Kelly Ogden utilises her voice, which at times can be angelic. The edgy instrumentals and melodies all intertwine to create an atmosphere, one that ultimately thrills.
The lyrical content is pessimistic but doesn’t taint the overall impact of the album. It is an ambitious disc, louder than bombs, and completely unapologetic. Ogden conveys times where she’s locked inside her own mind. The record could be perceived as being an upbeat listen but it’s far from being a tranquil force. It’s a compendium of throbbing hurt and insincerity. It may be fuelled on high pitched vocals and punky riffs, but there’s an undercurrent of venom.
From lift off, The Dollyrots eagerly let us know of their views. They don’t offer us a pretty picture or gold. The songs describe beer spillages and love smashed into small intricate pieces. Ogden spearheads this with guitarist Luis Cabezas, who is a pivotal piece of the puzzle. Throughout Daydream Explosion, Cabezas plays some killer riffs and Ogden implements sturdy bass lines.
“Love You Instead” is a full throttle punk score. The dirty instrumental flair adds bite and the lyrics describe love in a new light. “No Princess” serves up a simple riff. The intelligent lyrics have been executed perfectly here. Ogden doesn’t care what people think of her, she feels vulnerable but is rebellious. "Oblivious" kick-starts the engine once more, and Ogden sneers. The bashful solo is compelling.
The Dollyrots triumph on Daydream Explosion. Their brand of punk is ever so energetic and there is substance behind their songs. Daydream Explosion is an opus fit enough to fly the flag of punk.
