Just Push Play: An Interview with LoveSick Radio
LoveSick Radio are set to take their blues rock to the biggest stages.
Columbus, Ohio and Las Vegas, Nevada. Two different cities that on the surface, probably do not have too much in common. The connection between the two certainly isn't an immediate one. For those looking for a link between the two can look no further than alternative blues rock band LoveSick Radio. Formed in 2016, the band took little time to hit the stage with noted bands from across the rock spectrum. They've shared it with everyone from the likes of New Found Glory and Paramore, to Kid Rock and Bon Jovi. It's quite a diverse mix, and it's not just because LoveSick Radio put on a great live show, but also because they've found a way to create music that speaks to listeners across genres.
On the cusp of performing at this year's Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (opening for Keith Urban no less), we caught up with guitarist David Harris and vocalist Troy Brown to talk LoveSick Radio, their new single, their upcoming Sturgis gig, and the progression of their big sound.
You guys are currently writing and recording new tracks? How’s it going?
David: Thanks so much for having us. We have a lot of new music in the works. We just started tracking a few new songs not to long ago. Plus we are mixing some new music we will be putting out soon as well.
I love the most recent song you released, “Bloodshot Eyes”, how did that song come about?
Troy: "Bloodshot Eyes" just sounded like an anthem to me when Dave sent the music so I knew I wanted something “big and fun” but also knew the song could be special so wanted to have some depth to the lyric and felt like it was a good opportunity for me to talk about my battles with depression
Is it about having too much fun- or working too hard?
David: I think it’s both! You work your ass off so you can have fun in the end. For me music is the best job in the world. But you have to work hard cuz it’s one of the hardest jobs as well. But extremely rewarding.
Listening to the songs you’ve written and recorded over the past few years (especially “Feels So Good” and “You Should Know”)- there’s been a big progression in the sound- these songs sound huge- was this something you guys were looking to do as songwriters, expanding that sound?
David: I like pushing myself and trying new things. I know for these new songs we wanted to let in more of the influences that made us want to play music to begin with. So there’s a lot of blues, slide guitar, punk, southern rock, Americana, soul as well as straight-up rock n roll in the songs.
Troy: As a songwriter, just constantly wanting to grow and challenging yourself to try new things.
So for those who aren’t familiar yet- share with us a little Lovesick Radio history- how did you guys get together?
Troy: It’s a running joke that Dave and I can’t remember where or when we first met... almost like we have always known about one another but I think its because we both ran in similar circles and both have similar taste in bands... the universe brought us together! [laughs]
You’re playing Sturgis this year at Buffalo Chip with Keith Urban. For those who may not be familiar with the significance of Sturgis in the United States- how important are these big shows to you guys- getting your music to such large audiences?
Troy: Definitely! Big shows like this are important for growing the fan base, but honestly, for me, this particular show has a pretty personal connection. My Grandfather was really into motorcycles and went to Sturgis early on when it was still a relatively new thing. I remember him always talking about it and all the stories... he brought back a beer can that he kept on a shelf at his house that had a Harley logo on one side and a Sturgis 1989 logo on the back...as a little kid, I just thought it was the coolest thing. My grandpa has since past, and I was able to get the can and it sits in my studio now. I plan to take it on the trip and have it on stage with us so I know my grandpa will be there on stage with me, and be super proud!
What are the best things about being on the road- especially touring around the US- that you guys can’t wait to get back to? Places, food, drinks, things to do?
David: I love traveling & seeing the world. To do it with a guitar is a blessing. Each country we’ve been to has a rich history and great food and sites.
Troy: Touring for me has changed over the years. I use to be so focused on the shows and didn’t really venture out of the venue or venue area too much, but recently I’ve been trying to “look up” more and enjoy the moments and take some time to explore, relax and have fun! Every part of the country offers something unique and special... really hard to pick just one thing!
Away from the studio and away from the road how do you guys take it easy and get away from things a little- is there a LoveSick Radio relaxation plan?
David: I work out, play music and go to movies. So it’s not really any different from what I do when we are in the studio or on the road.
Troy: I just love to spend time with friends and family. I love to have people over and cook and catch up...In the summer its all about finding a lake and a boat. Fall is bonfires and football for me.
What’s next for LoveSick Radio and what can we expect for the rest of 2019?
David: Lots of new songs, more live shows and some new videos. We are just getting started! Make sure you check us out wherever you follow music & bands.
