Jade Imagine and their Kubrick inspired "Big Old House"
Melbourne indie rock trio Jade Imagine have just released the Kubrick's inspired video for the single "Big Old House"
Melbourne continues to burst at the seams with the wealth of talent on show. Indie rock trio Jade Imagine are just one of the latest to emerge from the city, signing to Courtney Barnett and Jen Cloher's Milk Records and releasing an EP in 2017. Two years removed Jade Imagine have just released their latest offering, the track (and video), "Big Old House".
On show are the band's musical leanings; fuzzy, hazy, guitar-driven indie rock that meanders and curves in and out of post/pop influences. It's soft, but jangly, and features vocalist Jade McInally's swaying voice. The song itself is one McInally recalls as having been written: "after a dream".
The band have also premiered the video for the track, one that features the colors and hues of experimental art films of the past. The song is in slight contrast to the video's throwback look, but as they explain, the band wanted to capture that conflict between light and dark;
"it's about telling yourself in your darker moments to let the good things in, even if all you feel is negativity. In the clip, I am getting brainwashed by my happier, lighter and more wholesome self. It represents the ongoing conflict between the light and dark within ourselves."
The video was co-directed by the band and James Thomson and sought influence from noted filmmakers Daria Argento and Stanley Kubrick. McInally has stated that they were inspired "by the lighting in Dario Argento's film Suspiria and the brainwashing content of Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange." And it's easy to see how those influenced shaped the final product.
Jade Imagine will have their single launch on June 1st at Yah Yahs in Fitzroy, performing with Denise Le Menise and Spike Vincent.
