An interview with Triple Threat Records' Chris Holman
Triple Threat Records has grown into one of Canada's finest independent record labels
Chris Holman can look back at the last four years and be pretty happy with how things have gone. With the recent signing of The Amazing Larry's, Calgary based label Triple Threat Records continues to expand it's already impressive catalog. Since Holman decided that it would be an ideal approach for releasing his own band's material, Triple Threat has grown into one of Canada's finest independent record labels.
"I just basically awoke one morning saying "Hey why not start my own label" that way we can sign to a label that will make sure that they do what we want them to." Even though his band disbanded shortly after recording, Triple Threat has gone on to release fine records by Namesake, Racer Ten, Built in Shellbrook and their aptly titled Canadian compilation "Fucken'Eh!" Proving that finding artists with quality, honesty and a good work ethic pays off, "We look for someone that works hard, wants to tour, and represents themselves well. It's also nice to have a band that will promote the label as well. We don't appreciate bands that sing about racism, homophobia, or any offensive matter." It's easy to see how this has translated into good records by browsing their already impressive catalog. It's the moments and memories with these bands that make this whole process worthwhile, "Its all good fun. Especially if the band is rolling into my hometown or if I'm on the road with them, it's for the most part good times, and good laughs. I guess the bonding friendship with the bands have been the best thing thus far."
With the help of his girlfriend and his close friends, Holman has been able to build a solid base for releasing records. In a business so difficult to succeed in, Triple Threat has all the makings of a long term, successful venture. Holman knows exactly what an independent label needs in order to succeed; "I also have some great friends, from all over Canada as well as the world trying to get the name Triple Threat Records out to other people. Word of mouth is everything in this business."
Hoping to make this a full time job sometime in the near future, Holman and Triple Threat have made great strides to achieve its goals. Holman speaks of the possibility that two new bands may be joining the label, although it is still in negotiations, thus almost top secret, fans of the label know that these bands will demonstrate not only the growth of the label but will ensure a successful future for all involved.
