U2
Go Home – Live from Slane Castle
(Universal)
This DVD representation of their 2001 Elevation Tour
is quite impressive. From personal experience, I can
say it is even better than the real thing.
Seriously though, I saw this tour my freshman year (a
long 3 years ago) at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim.
I went with a couple of family friends but we got our
tickets somewhat late. As a result, we were unable to
get tickets for the festival area. Instead, we acquired
lovely seats aligned up the sidewall of the stadium.
We were quite the ways away from the stage. While we
could still see the tiny specks that we believed were
U2, we had to view the overhead screens to visibly discern
any level of detail. It could have been definitively
worse. The drunken man in front of us could have spilled
his beer backwards, he could have danced for longer
than he did, and there could have been much more of
him.
U2 Go Home brings you closer than any of the
member’s mothers are allowed to get. You have
the best seats in the house with no obnoxious drunken
men dancing like jackasses, hindering your view (unless
you watch it with my neighbor’s boyfriend). One
can see the beads of sweat dripping down Bono’s
weatherworn face as he belts out the melodies we have
all come to love. A great aspect of this DVD is that
there are numerous shots of the other band members as
well. Initially, when I ran through this DVD I was disappointed.
Disappointed because at the show I went to there was
a splendid rendition of “Mysterious Ways”
in the set that appeared to be missing here. There were
these amazing props in the back that showed seductive
yet not sexualized outlines of women. It is really hard
to explain but the entire moment was incredible. Little
did I know, “Mysterious Ways” was saved
for one of the bonus features of the DVD. Good thing
too because it is one not to miss.
The camera work on Go Home is quite well done
as well. There are great shots of the band, the never
ending mass of people, and Slane Castle itself. One
thing I loved was the switch from clear images to images
of lesser quality. The grainy images were not numerous
but the transition from them to clear were executed
well and perfectly placed. It gives the DVD a tattered
feeling that one does not get from the actual show.
Go Home will keep you singing, can ease you
to sleep, and most importantly, has the ability to move
you. I recommend this for all.
